Indigenous Children and Family Programs

Provided by Fraser Region Aboriginal Friendship Centre Association (FRAFCA)

Various programs designed for improving the early childhood development of indigenous children and to improve parenting skills for new parents.
The following programs are offered:

- AECD Outreach: Tailored support to families with children 0-6 to access FRAFCA services or other community resources and supports.
- My Urban Elder: Monthly Elders lunches alongside post-natal caregivers and babies.
- Reclaiming Connections: A parenting program for caregivers of pre-teens and teens ages 8-18, that incorporates culture and an Elder to offer a safe environment for addressing inter-generational trauma and impacts of residential schools on parenting.
- Taking Care of Your Children: A weekly group on Friday mornings that offers parents an opportunity to gain new skills and apply learnings through parent-child engagement activities that promotes attachment. This is a great place for parents to build a community support system with other parents who have children in the same age group. For parents with children ages 2-4 years old.
- Awahsuk Aboriginal Headstart Preschool: A comprehensive preschool program designed to meet the spiritual, emotional, intellectual, and physical needs of Aboriginal preschool-aged children. Takes place at the Awahsuk Preschool.
- O’Siem Family Night: A weekly Thursday night family dinner with cultural activities.
- Bringing Traditions Home: A 10-week parenting program for caregivers with children 0-6 years old, based on the Seven Sacred Teachings.
- Spirit Bear Child Development Program: A child development program that has three main components - Culture, Nutrition, and Education. Mornings and afternoons classes to do crafts, eat healthy snacks and drum.
- Postnatal: A weekly parenting group program that has two components - a parent group session where they learn new information about their child’s growth and development, and a parent-child engagement session where they have the opportunity to implement their newly acquired knowledge and also receive feedback/support from the program facilitator. For caregivers with children 3 -24 months.
- Prenatal & Doula Support: A weekly group for expectant parents. It is a culturally rich prenatal program that enhances the skills and knowledge of expecting mothers and fathers. A doula, or “birth keeper”, is a resource to expectant mothers.
- FASD Keyworker Program: Supports caregivers of children 0-19 years old who were exposed to alcohol or drugs prenatally, have complex developmental behavior conditions, or have no diagnosis but show serious deficits in the areas of development and learning, mental health/behavior, or adaptive and social skills.
- Indigenous Domestic Violence Community Liaison: Supports individuals and families impacted by domestic violence, with the goal of reducing and alleviating child safety concerns and enhancing the functioning of families. Helps individuals and families problem solve their situation through brief solution-focused counselling.
- Indigenous Domestic Violence Prevention Counselling: 1-1 counselling support to women who faced relationship violence, men who have experience violence or who harm their partners or as couples where safety permits. Counselling provided by a Counsellor/Educator and Elders.
- In-Home Family Support Worker: The In-Home Support Worker acts as a resource person, advocate, mentor and support person to caregivers in the home with the goal to improve family wellbeing and stability.
- Aboriginal Infant Development Program: A voluntary home visit-based program that provides screening and assessments for children 0-6 years of age. Consultants work closely with biological families, foster families and social workers to focus on family stabilization and child development, including assisting families with Ministry involvement, speech and language, occupational therapy and physiotherapy appointments and much more.
- Family Connections Worker: supports and advocates for families with children ages 5-18 to access needed government and community-based resources and services to help them thrive. Provides referrals and support to access urgent needs, such as subsidies, food bank, clothing, furniture, childcare
