Confident Parents: Thriving Kids - Coaching Service For Parents of Children with Anxiety or Behaviour Challenges

Provided by Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA)

Confident Parents: Thriving Kids is a family-focused phone-based coaching service to help parents support their children aged 3-12 to manage either anxiety or behaviour challenges.
Program is currently experiencing a surge in referrals, leading to a delay of 6 months between when a referral is received, and the family is contacted to complete the intake process.

Confident Parents: Thriving Kids has two program streams to help parents support their children aged 3-12 to manage either anxiety or behaviour challenges. Behaviour challenges may include uncooperative or disruptive behaviour, aggression or defiance. Sometimes anxiety can look similar, but the behaviours only appear in certain situations – like getting ready for school or going to bed. When children are feeling anxious, they may seem restless, agitated, withdrawn or tearful, complain of stomach aches or have trouble falling asleep.

Phone based coaching sessions are available during the day, evenings, or on weekends to accommodate families needs. All Confident Parents program services and materials are free to participants, assuming they are eligible. Programs are available throughout the entire province of British Columbia.

Behaviour Program:
Confident Parents: Thriving Kids – Behaviour Program is a telephone-based coaching service for parents proven effective in reducing mild to moderate behavioural problems in children ages 3–12. Through a series of 6 to 14 weekly coaching sessions, along with exercises and workbooks, trained coaches empower parents and caregivers to learn effective skills and techniques that support social skills and cooperation in their child.

The program is offered at no cost to parents and caregivers across BC, through referral from a family doctor or pediatrician.

Anxiety Program:
Confident Parents: Thriving Kids – Anxiety Program is a new telephone coaching service for parents and caregivers that effectively reduces mild to moderate anxiety in their children ages 3 – 12. Parents and caregivers watch videos that demonstrate key concepts and approaches, and engage in scheduled sessions with coaches by phone to help them build skills and strategies they can use with their child and family at home and in community settings.

Developed in collaboration with BC experts who work extensively with children experiencing anxiety and their families, this ‘made in BC’ program incorporates concepts from cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).

The anxiety program is offered at no cost to parents with a referral from a physician, pediatrician, child psychiatrist, psychologist, nurse practitioner, teacher, school counsellor or psychologist, Early Childhood Educator, or a Child and Youth Mental Health (CYMH/ACYMH) clinician or Ministry of Children and Family Development–funded team.
