The Northern Gender Clinic team consists of: an MD, NP, and registered psychiatric nurse (RPN) who provide care to Trans and Gender Diverse people from Northern BC. The clinic’s mandate includes capacity building for primary care providers in the North to support the provision of gender affirming care within the patient’s primary care home and regional Northern Health services. The NGC team is eager to collaborate with providers through case review and education, consultation, as well as specialized care for those with medical, surgical, or psychosocial complexity.
Northern Gender Clinic services include:
- A safe space to explore identity, ask questions and be directed to reliable resources, information, peer supports, and parent/caregiver supports.
- Review of gender incongruence and gender affirming goals of care.
- Psychosocial support for trans and gender diverse people of all ages and their families.
- Consideration for gender affirming puberty blocker therapy in children and youth.
- Gender Affirming Hormone Therapy (GAHT) discussion, planning, initial prescriptions, and monitoring (goal of discharge back to PCP once stable on GAHT).
- Gender affirming surgery discussion, planning and referrals.
- In person post-operative care locally plus remote support for providers doing post-operative care elsewhere in the Northern Health Region.
- Ongoing support for primary care providers throughout consultation and after discharge back to primary care.
The Northern Gender Clinic accepts self referrals as well as referrals from providers including, but not limited to: family physicians, nurse practitioners, social workers, mental health clinicians, or school counsellors..
Services are covered under MSP (Medical Services Plan), so there is no cost to accessing care.
