Volunteer Palliative Care Services - Abbotsford

Provided by Abbotsford Hospice & Grief Support Society (AHGSS)

Provides comfort, support and care for people with a serious, long-term or life-threatening illness. Services are provided in the home, hospice, or hospital depending on the stage of illness and the client’s needs.
Abbotsford Hospice & Grief Support Society offers a variety of services to address psycho-social, spiritual, and practical issues, at no cost to clients and their families. They offer end-of-life care services through trained client-support volunteers.

Holmberg House Hospice: AHGSS trained volunteers support the residents of Holmberg House and their loved ones by offering comfort through presence, conversation and acts of kindness. We also offer life enriching activities such as special crafts, pet visits, musicians, or even peaceful walks in the Serenity Garden. Fresh cookies are baked daily, providing a warm, welcoming atmosphere in the family kitchen for visiting over a cup of coffee. A highlight of the week is a Tea Cart loaded with treats and special teas for residents and their families.

Palliative Complex Care Unit (PCCU) Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre: AHGSS trained volunteers support both patients and their loved ones at the PCCU by interacting with them, providing refreshments and a special “High Tea” weekly.

In-Home Palliative Support: When requested, Hospice companions can offer an encouraging presence to support the dying and their caregivers in the patient’s home.

Anticipatory Grief: Hospice Support is available to caregivers who are living with the impending death of a loved one. Individual and group support is available to encourage caregivers as they explore changing roles and relationships, self-care and stress management, grief and loss, and planning for the future.

Vigil Services: Abbotsford Hospice & Grief Support Society believes that no one should have to die alone. Hospice companions may be available to keep vigil with a patient during the final 72 hours of life. This service may be offered in Holmberg House, the PCCU, or the patient’s residence.

Spiritual Care Services: At end-of-life there are often questions pertaining to spirituality. AHGSS respects cultural and religious diversity and can provide spiritual support if requested through our hospice companions or by referring to local spiritual care practitioners.
