Bereavement Programs
- One-to-One Grief Support: Personalized support for people of all ages, offered by professional staff in a safe, supportive space, to help individuals and families navigate their grief journey.
- Bereavement Visitation: Volunteers provide emotional support and companionship to grieving individuals in their homes and in the community.
- Child & Youth Program: Offers free, low-barrier services tailored to meet the diverse needs of grieving children and youth, including individual and group support, in-school support, family activities, expressive arts, and equine connections.
- Coffee & Compassion Support Circle: A safe, supportive space for adults grieving the death of a loved one to connect with others, improve understanding of the grief process, ask unanswered questions, and access helpful resources. Meets once monthly on a drop-in basis.
- First Step Grief Support Group: A safe, supportive space for adults grieving the death of a loved one. Participants connect with others to share experiences, gain mutual support, and learn insights as they navigate their journey through grief and into renewal. Meets once weekly for eight weeks.
- MAiD Grief Support Group: A safe, confidential group dedicated to providing support for individuals processing grief after a death through Medical Assistance in Dying. Meets once weekly for four weeks.
- Pet Death Grief Support Group: A supportive space for adults to process the grief following the death of a beloved pet. Participants share experiences, learn self-care strategies, and explore ways to honour their pet’s memory. Meets once weekly for four weeks.
- Pregnancy & Infant Loss Support: Providing support for parents grieving the death of a baby through miscarriage, stillbirth, or during the early stages of infancy.
- Second Step Grief Peer Support Group: Offers ongoing support for individuals who have completed First Step Grief Support Group. Meeting twice a month, participants attend one group session and one luncheon; providing opportunities to share experiences and support one another while fostering social connections.
- Sibling Grief Peer Support Group: This peer-led group supports adults grieving the death of a sibling; offering a safe space to connect, share experiences, and engage in creative activities to process grief.
- Supportive Walking Group: A weekly opportunity for those grieving to connect through a gentle walk at Sardis Park, followed by coffee and conversation. This program fosters healing and community in a relaxed setting.
- Traumatic Loss Grief Support Group: A safe space offering support and understanding for those grieving sudden or traumatic deaths such as suicide, homicide, drug poisoning, or workplace accident. Meets once weekly for eight weeks and/or once monthly on a drop-in basis.
- Caregiver Connection Support Circle: A group for caregivers of a dying person to build meaningful relationships with others who understand your journey, share experiences, learn about anticipatory grief, and access resources in a supportive space. Meets once monthly.
- Palliative Patient Visitation: Compassionate volunteers and staff provide companionship to palliative patients at Cascade Hospice Residence, Chilliwack General Hospital, and Bradley Centre, in care facilities, at the Hospice Society, and in their homes.
- Vigil Services: A team of trained volunteers is available to provide bedside support to individuals and their families during the final 72 hours of a person’s life in a setting that is home to the individual.
Volunteers provide weekly treatments featuring energy-based modalities such as Healing Touch and Reiki to promote calmness and healing. These sessions, available at Chilliwack Hospice Society or by request in Cascade Hospice Residence, support palliative and bereaved individuals in reducing stress and enhancing overall well-being.
Education and Training
- Advance Care Planning: Free sessions guiding participants in creating end-of-life care plans, including representation agreements and advance directives.
- Educational Workshops: Monthly in-person workshops and presentations on a variety of topics such as end-of-life, financial and estate planning, self-care and wellness.
- Teen Grief Peer Support Training: Specialized training that equips teens to provide peer support to others experiencing grief. Students apply through their local School District #33 Work Experience Program.
- Basic Hospice Training: Equips volunteers with the knowledge and skills to provide compassionate support to individuals and families facing end-of-life challenges. Covering topics like communication, hospice palliative care, grief, and self-care, this 35-hour course is an essential foundation for anyone interested in hospice care.
