Youth and Young Adult Substance Use Treatment Program

Provided by BC Children's Hospital (BCCH)

The program supports youth and young adults whose primary concern is substance addiction, and/or needs for substance use or addiction are beyond what their local community health resources or health authority can offer.
BC Children’s Hospital offers dedicated services for substance use care. Support is also available for concurrent disorders, where a child or youth is experiencing both mental health and substance use concerns.

Provincial Youth and Young Adult Substance Use Live-In Treatment Program:
Substance use treatment beds at Phoenix Society and Coast Mental Health sites in Surrey, BC are designed for youth and young adults from 17 to 24 years of age. Phoenix Society provides care for male, male-identifying, or non-binary youth. Coast Mental Health provides care for female, female-identifying, or non-binary youth. These live-in treatment programs assist youth and young adults:
  • Whose primary concern is substance use
  • Who have experienced several relapses
  • Whose substance use treatment needs are beyond the care available in their community
While mental health supports are available, these services are not intended to treat formal mental health diagnoses. Accessing treatment at both sites is voluntary. Treatment program includes:
  • Individual, group, and family therapy
  • Therapeutic recreational activities such as hiking
  • Life-skills training
  • High school completion options
  • Support as individuals prepare to return to their home community
Most youth or young adults will finish treatment within three to six months.

  • Complete forms: Providers and their patient should fill out the referral form and the client participation forms completely and in collaboration. Please include all of the required information.
  • Submit referral forms: Health-care providers: submit the completed referral package to your local health authority liaison. Contact information for the local health authority liaison is included in the referral package.
  • Review of referral: Once the referral is received, the access and flow coordinator will conduct a review.
